5 Tips for Networking
2012-05-22

networking, networking event, networking in business, business networking,

Networking plays a vital role in running a successful business.

But many of us shy away from networking as we dread walking into a room and introducing ourselves and company to a group of strangers.

In this article I’m going to share a collection of Colleen Debaise’s (entrepreneur.com) top networking tips, which she has learned over the years in business:

1. Resist the urge to arrive late. If you arrive early at a networking event, you’ll notice that it’s calmer and quieter. This is the perfect time to find people who don’t have a conversation partner as attendees won’t have formed groups yet.

2. Ask easy questions. Don’t be the person awkwardly standing around the edge of the room waiting for someone to approach them. Get a conversation started by simply walking up to a person or group and asking if it’s ok for you to join them. Listen carefully to what they’re saying. If you’re not naturally an extrovert, you’re likely to be a fantastic listener, which is an essential tool when getting to know people.

3. Ditch the sales pitch. It’s vital you don’t come across as a pushy salesperson, make sure you keep your exchange fun and informal. If you are able to show your likeable personality, people will be more responsive and show a greater interest in your company.

4. Share your passion. Tell people about your startup story or how your product or service was brought to life. If you can win people over with your enthusiasm and passion it will leave them with a lasting impression.

5. Smile. It’s simple and effective, but often overlooked. Share a smile to put your nervous self at ease, and you’ll be perceived as a friendly person inviting conversation. If you’re nervous or dreading an event, make sure you leave this negative energy at the door.
